Teachers find that my “Icky-Squishy” science shows get kids jazzed up about science by exploring the oozy, slimy, booger-y side of life! I invite students up to help with the “Ick-speriments” and teach them a lot of science as we laugh together.
I offer a 1 hour presentation for grades 3-6 and/or a half hour presentation for grades K-2, or individual classroom hands-on lessons. I am also happy to discuss hands-on lessons for individual classes. Contact me to schedule a presentation!
Sharing my enthusiasm for science, engineering, and our world with children is one of my favorite parts of life. I taught science and math to grades 3-6 in the Cambridge and Belmont Public Schools before becoming an instructor at MIT, teaching and designing K-12 STEM curriculum and teacher professional development workshops for field trips, schools and summer programs.
I have performed interactive science shows at elementary and middle schools around the country: in California, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Arizona, Massachusetts, Texas and more. I feel lucky to have co-authored Oh Ick! 114 Science Experiments Guaranteed to Gross You Out! and several other elementary science textbooks with the hilarious Joy Masoff, bestselling author of “Oh, Yuck!” and “Oh, Yikes!”
Below is a short video of me in action on “Science and U” on CUNY TV in New York. I’m at 4:05, 11:57 and 21:06. The first clip is a good example of the kind of “Ick-speriment” I do during shows. If it doesn’t play automatically, go to http://www.cuny.tv/show/scienceandu/PR2006331
“Jessica’s visit was one of the most engaging assemblies we had this school year and the kids were talking about it for days afterwards. The teachers commented that it was obvious Jessica has a teaching background by how well she managed the audience of 300 third through fifth graders.” – Sheila Warren, Librarian at Laurel Elementary, Menlo Park, CA
“I wanted to thank Jessica for an awesome visit… Our students and teachers have been raving about the presentation. You never know, when having a visiting performer, if it will be really educational, and sometimes I wonder if the students’ time might have been better spent in the classroom. But not with Jessica’s performance. She packed the show with science education.” – Jay Borchers, Principal at Southdale Elementary, Kettering, OH
“Her experience talking with kids really showed and her hands-on approach was so effective.” – Meghan Dietsche Goel, BookPeople Bookstore, Austin, TX
“We loved having Jessica Garrett and “Oh, Ick” at the West Branch Library in Somerville, MA! Our crowd loved Jessica’s experiments, science facts, and fun. People are still talking about the “Ooze Olympics”. We hope to have her back for another program soon!” – Alison Mitchell, Librarian, Somerville Public Libraries, Somerville, MA
“The kids absolutely loved the presentation. I think she got asked ‘will you come back to our school?’ over a dozen times.” – John Ganiard, Literati Bookstore, Ann Arbor, MI
“I heard from Boulder Hill School, and they said she might have been the best visit they’ve had. The staff was very impressed.” – Angie Gaul – Anderson’s Bookshop, Chicago, IL
“The events for Oh Ick! were FANTASTIC!” – Lauren Savage, The Reading Bug Bookstore, San Carlos, CA
